What kind of insurance coverage does my business need to protect against liability lawsuits?

As a lawyer, I would advise that businesses generally need several types of insurance coverage to protect against liability lawsuits, including:

  • General liability insurance provides coverage for accidents and injuries that occur on your business premises or as a result of your business operations. This type of insurance can cover legal fees, settlements, and judgments if a customer or visitor is injured on your property or if your business causes damage to someone else's property.
  • Professional liability insurance, also known as errors and omissions (E&O) insurance, provides coverage for lawsuits related to professional services or advice. This type of insurance is commonly purchased by businesses providing services such as accounting, legal or medical services. It could protect the business in case of a claim of negligence or malpractice by a client or patient.
  • Product liability insurance provides coverage for lawsuits related to product defects or injuries caused by a product. If your business manufactures, sells or distributes products, product liability insurance coverage is essential.

It is important to note that the type and amount of insurance needed will vary depending on the nature and size of the business. Additionally, some businesses may need additional insurance coverage for specific risks, such as cyber liability insurance for businesses that handle sensitive customer information.

It is recommended that businesses work with an experienced insurance broker or attorney to assess their specific needs and obtain appropriate insurance coverage.
