In order to become a licensed contractor in Pennsylvania, an individual must meet certain requirements as mandated by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. The following are the general requirements:
- Age: The individual must be at least 18 years old.
- Experience: The individual must have at least four years of experience in his or her trade, along with a combination of education, training, or apprenticeship.
- Education: In addition to the experience, the individual must possess a certain level of education or training in the relevant trade. A high school diploma or GED certificate is a basic requirement.
- Financial Responsibility: The individual must show evidence of financial responsibility by providing proof of bonding, insurance, and/or a statement of financial stability.
- Criminal History Check: The individual must pass a criminal history background check.
- Exam: The individual must pass a licensing exam, which tests the knowledge and abilities necessary for the specific trade.
- Submit Applications and Fees: The individual must submit an application along with the appropriate fee.
There are, however, some exceptions to the above requirements. For example, a licensed professional engineer or architect may not need to provide proof of education or experience if the individual has extensive knowledge of the construction industry. Similarly, a licensed individual from another state may be granted a reciprocal license without certain requirements.
